So, this is a poem I wrote a year ago. I had watched a lot of animal cops, least to say. -shrug- Somehow I just sat down and typed this thing up. It's my best piece of poetry to this day. x] And yes, one of the lines doesn't rhyme. Sue me.
Loyalty
Mans best friend,
Thats one friendship I cannot mend.
I protected him with my life,
Even if he did treat me with much strife.
He would beat me for no reason,
Still I'd unconditionally love him no matter what the season.
He gave me a name that I accepted-
He called me Jake, a name I never rejected.
" Jake, Jake! Get up! " He'd call when we were young,
Back when it was all a game, a bunch of fun.
Now he throws me around without a care,
How could this be considered fair?
I would protect him until the end,
I was one of the most loyal friends.
I don't flinch or draw back in fear when he hit me,
It's just how he wants my life to be.
" Now, " He says " it is time for something new, "
Oh boy! I can't wait to see what he wants me to do!
He leads me into a pin,
The doors close and I notice another dog before two loud humans shout " Begin! "
In an instant I'm laying on the ground,
Full of new pain I have found.
The other dog, driven to anger by unnatural causes takes another bite,
He rips out my flesh and I begin to see this is a fight.
My master, he looks so disappointed in me,
I resist the urge to flee.
Instead I get up, narrowing my eyes,
My benevolent spirit begins to die.
There is no turning back now - that's for sure,
With a graceful leap I take a large bite out of his fur.
The opponent gives a yelp,
A whiny little scream for help.
To my surprise my anger is growing by the second,
It isn't this opponent, I reckon.
It's all from him - that man I call master,
As I think about him my attacks grow faster.
In minutes my opponent lays slain at my paws,
Hearing an odd sound I begin to snarl, begining to get even more cross.
A bullet whizzes past me- it's the police,
All the humans move in one big mob, trying to run from the law-inforcing beasts.
They're going to get my master!
I run, and hearing another shot from a gun I'm pushed faster.
Quickly I leap into the air,
I take the hit for him, wondering if it really is fair.
I fall to the ground, blood spewing from my chest,
Everything starts going black; I did my best.
I was as loyal as I could be,
So I took the blow for him, as a sign of love from me.
My head begins to spin, and words become sweet mumbles,
I can't even find the strength to grumble.
Somehow I push myself to stand,
Wanting for one last time to feel his warm hands.
I started running, finding it very hard,
The police watch me as I tried to run far.
My eyes laid upon him, my master dearest, cornered in an alley,
I slowly approached him, finally mustering up a whimper.
He glared at me and kicked my weak body up against a brick wall,
This time I cannot get up from this fall.
All I wanted was for him to hold me like when we were kids,
Instead what does he do? What he always does, he hits.
Now I'm fading fastly,
My voice past the stage of raspy.
With one last whine I slip into darkness,
Remembering how he was heartless.
I was loyal to the end, I did my best,
Now I'm off duty and I can rest.
Rest forever.
